Imagine if the word ‘work’ didn’t exist
What word would you describe what most of us do between 9-5 every day of the week for the large majority of our lives?
Perhaps you create, inspire, motivate, educate, enlighten?? Now before you think this all a lot of ‘buzz’ words, do those words not sound more positive and interesting than just saying I go to work…maybe not? Maybe you enjoy your ‘work’, but you will still see it as work.
Work for many is seen as negative thing, it’s not always associated with reward and I don’t mean money, many of us are not inspired by what we do and it’s not to do with the pay, some of the highest earning corporate executives are deeply unhappy.
However, what are the choices they say? Most of us will work in paid-for-employment for the most part of our lives, because it’s what we know, it’s what we’re brought up and educated to do – it’s what our parents did.
The other option is self-employment, enterprise, running your own business.
That’s what I do and guess what I never say I’m off to work, I never say to others I work doing this, I don’t have that negative mind-set towards what I do each day. I don’t have the constraints of doing it from 9-5, I do it whenever and wherever suits me.
So what do I do all day if I don’t ‘work’? What is the ‘it’ that I do?
I connect, network and grow myself and my enterprise.
I connect to customers, to the web, to partners, to opportunities. I network with other connections to create more connections and opportunities. The result……BOOM!! I grow my ideas, my knowledge, my network and guess what? My enterprise grows, just by connecting.
So I am a connector, making connections whenever, wherever, so I’m liberated to connect away and get my work/life balance how I want. Some days I have to connect harder than others, some days the connections don’t happen and I get cut off from opportunities.
But I no longer ‘work’ and I haven’t retired….I’m a connector, connecting for the rest of my life, as why would you ever stop connecting. So I feel liberated from what most of us say we do all day every day. Once you get there and feel that liberation, wow it feels great and it gives you amazing energy and satisfaction….I truly get to choose what I do each day.
By the way my current enterprise is called @Work Hubs….so I’m mad you all say, but if I had called it @Connecting Hubs, people would have scratched their heads and thought is that a telephone exchange or data hub?? We currently understand what ‘work’ is, but change happens and it’s time to connect.
In a year…2…maybe 3 years, who knows how long, as change happens so rapidly now, we will evolve to become @Connect, because that’s what more and more of us will be doing instead of ‘work’, we will be running our own enterprise and connecting all day long.
