Are you nuts?
You can’t fast track a community, well maybe in some grim moment of catastrophe where humans drop everything and bond as fast as they can just before their spaceship crashes back to earth.
What has prompted this little tantrum are the bits of coworking propaganda that float past me on the internet shouting “coworking solutions” or “global agile working solutions”. (I have not seen that last line – I just wanted to make a point.)
When I think about it, as soon as any organisation starts using the words “global” or “solution” you know they have been scammed by a branding company that has yet to get their hands on the word innovation.
It just takes a long time, even if you all know each other before you arrive it takes a long time. It is also worth pointing out that community needs to happen first, you can’t just open a coworking space and expect community to “happen” – I have tried and then I had the sense to listen to people wiser and more experienced than me in the coworking world.
It goes like this for me.
There is a honeymoon period where you all get excited, then you talk about each others laptops, software, what is on Netflix and the local coffee place.
You dream up amazing groups you can have books clubs, gym clubs, all playing squash and football together. Only half of these happen – (which is totally fine!!!!)
Then one day you can’t pay the rent or your client drops you.
Around this time, the community really kicks in. You are in the shit and the other people who have been in the same place smell that whiff of despair and self-loathing.
The crash occurs a few ways – for instance, your software breaks, deletes all your work and you genuinely forgot to make a backup.
Another is where you subconsciously sabotage yourself because your teacher or first true love told you that you were shit. So you took this client knowing they’d amplify this trait in you and think on one will ever spot the self-sabotage. It will remain a mystery to everyone.
Pro Tip: Get really self-aware by writing, meditating or tracking your behaviour in a way that floats your boat.
Get really really really self-aware by writing, meditating or tracking your behaviour in a way that floats your boat.
The answer does not lie at the bottom of fifteen pints of beer, well maybe once or twice so you know the feeling when it hits you.
When you have done this painful work you will be useful to the community and they will connect to you better. All this will happen so fast you will think you have fast tracked the community.
